Online
I approach every website as an individual challenge; I believe that no matter how complex, difficult or unusual a client's needs are, that
there is always a way to meet them. I'm frustrated by developers,
When Hunts, an outsized menswear store, wanted to attract more customers to their online business, I devised a voucher scheme and designed the vouchers, coordinated
with the printers on their behalf, and coded the voucher system into their website.
whose work I often pick up the pieces from, who take the second-best or an even
more unsatisfactory solution purely because they are unable to think creatively. I've combined all aspects of technology; text messaging, bar-coding,
windows applications, printing, and much more. I am very much a geek at heart; if can't already do what's required, I will learn how.
I look forward to new challenges, and am able to honestly use the word
exciting to describe them. One of the most important parts of the
process is discussing what a client actually wants. I research before contact, so I can provide many useful suggestions and ideas
and give a good indication of the current levels of competition online.
I am highly experienced with
design. I hold a Foundation Diploma in Art and Design, and a BA (Hons) degree in Photography
(specializing in fine art/documentary) along with several other qualifications in IT and design. I can create very strong designs, incorporating
logos, colours, and corporate identities and brand image either already existing or created bespoke. I understand just how important a good design is,
and can integrate that into an entire website.
When bh101, a local information site, needed an economical way of incorporating text messaging, I built a server with GSM capabilities and programmed
a bespoke application to allow them to automatically handle incoming and outgoing messages, all using a £5 PAYG sim card.
Another area I really excel in is
programming. At 14 years old I had software being reviewed in UK magazines, used by hundreds
of thousands of people, and have progressed since. I create both web-based and Windows applications. I've made it so clients
can update their websites with applications, run from their desktop, simpler than Windows® calculator. This skill means the websites I create
are incredibly functional. Server-side; I generally work with PHP which is immensely powerful and allows for integration with databases and
other software.
A subject I've studied and have a great understanding of is human interaction with technology. Through this I create websites that are highly
intuitive to use. Even once a website is deployed, I use a special monitoring script I've written to track visitors around it and use
this information to optimize the website further, playing on the ways visitors navigate to make it behave more instinctively,
and therefore encourage them to explore further.
When it comes to
deploy a website, I have the skills to nurture the entire process. I am familiar with all methods
of hosting; from building a server and configuring it, to selecting the right hosting package. I can oversee the entire process, and have
links with several London-based companies that I've used for a long time and know to be very reliable. I can give advice on domain names,
register them for you, look after them for you in the long-term and even attempt to
rescue them for you; several times I have retrieved domains a client has previously registered.
I run a server from my home, dubbed Pubert (after a string of servers named Hubert, and then Qubert, who subsequently blew up) which runs
a replica of the server a client's website will eventually end up on. It is this server that I build websites on, and the reason that
deployment goes very smoothly. It also means I can show a client the progress of their website from any internet terminal.
When Trace, the gallery in Weymouth had over two hundred pages of disorganised information; I wrote a script to automatically
collate the information out of the pages and insert it into a database, along with any corresponding images, and was then able to present it neatly and give
the Trace team the power to quickly add to and amend the information.
A developer's work does not stop once a site is online. Whilst there are situations when a website will stay static permanently, much more
often than not a client wants a website that can be easily maintained and
kept up to date.
One of the first things I discuss when meeting a prospective client is
how computer-
savvy they are, some want to edit their websites using HTML, code and notepad, but usually I build bespoke
back ends
for every website I make. The powerful control panel I give to clients allows them to make
any changes they need - be it stock control, editing text and creating news/journal entries, uploading images, or anything else; I make each
control panel from scratch specifically for each individual website, so it's functions are meticulously tailored. I am also happy to be available to make
any modifications to a website for its lifetime.
I have extensive experience in how to best
promote a website. The entire time I am working on a site, I am making sure it takes full advantage
of search engines through the structure of the pages and the whole website. I have tried and tested probably every form of advertising, from
Google AdWords to the Yellow Pages, and Word of Mouth to unique voucher codes on printed media. I will never waste a client's money on fruitless advertising
and always have a very good idea of what will work and what won't.
I require very little sleep and this is quite an advantage for my clients, as it means I'm available nearly all of the time. I'm available by phone,
email, MSN, in person at my residence. I also have transport and am happy to meet at your own premises; I much prefer working face to face. I am,
however, used to working remotely over phone/internet and don't see distance as a hindrance. An option my clients always have is for me to maintain
the running of their website for them; I look after hosting, domains and billing, monitor uptime, make changes, promote, create statistics, and
provide overall reassurance.
